Who Gets the Last Word? Election Disinformation in Immigrant Communities
Who gets the last word when election disinformation spreads through trusted community networks? With the midterms just around the corner in November, false and misleading information about voting and immigration issues could keep eligible voters from participating altogether.
This briefing will explore messages shared on social media platforms such as WhatsApp, WeChat, and others used by immigrant and diaspora communities worldwide. The discussion will also explore AI’s role, including deepfakes, misleading campaign videos, and inaccurate voting information from chatbots, with examples comparing responses in Spanish and English. Attendees will receive a short guide to identifying AI-generated disinformation.
