LA County Library and LA County Department of Arts and Culture Kick Off Music Stars, a Free Six-Week Music Program for Youth

Los Angeles County, CA – LA County Library invites youth ages 11–13 to unleash their musical potential with Music Stars, a free six-week series of in-person group music lessons that began on Monday, June 30, 2025. From aspiring guitarists and drummers to budding keyboard players, participants will explore the world of music through engaging, hands-on instruction led by professional music instructors.

Taking place at six library locations across Los Angeles County, Music Stars offers weekly 45-minute sessions focused on acoustic guitar, electronic drum kit, or electronic keyboard. Students will also receive foundational training in music theory, sight-reading, and performance techniques, all within a supportive group learning environment. Instrument checkouts will be available, empowering students to practice between lessons.

“Music Stars is more than just an introduction to music, it’s a chance for young people to build confidence, express creativity, and experience the joy of learning something new,” said Skye Patrick, County Librarian. “By offering access to free lessons and instruments, we’re making music education more accessible to families across LA County.”

“We are proud to collaborate with LA County Library on Music Stars, a new music lending and lesson program at libraries that puts instruments and music instruction into the hands of young people across our communities. The arts are a great summer activity, they also bring positive benefits to our lives, from learning to health to social connection—every child deserves access to the arts,” said Kristin Sakoda, Director of the LA County Department of Arts and Culture, which contributed funding to help support the music lessons offered.

Classes will be held every Monday until August 4, 2025, at the following library locations: Compton, Lancaster, Malibu, Norwalk, Rosemead, and San Fernando. Space is extremely limited, and registration is required. Participants may sign up for only one instrument track but can join waitlists for others.

Students must commit to all six sessions and follow guidelines for instrument borrowing. A parent or guardian must remain onsite during the class. After registration, a staff member will follow up to confirm participation.
