What’s Changing in Medi-Cal: Work Rules, Renewals, and Benefits

Federal and state policy changes to Medi-Cal, the state’s version of Medicaid, are reshaping how millions of Medi-Cal members can access vital health care benefits and services.

In this briefing, policy experts from the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) will explain the latest federal and state changes affecting Medi-Cal and what they mean for members.

Topics will include updated federal immigration status classifications taking effect in October 2026; new federal work and community engagement requirements and the transition of approximately 2 million members from managed care to the Medi-Cal fee-for-service delivery system beginning in January 2027; six-month eligibility checks for some adults beginning on March 1, 2027; and new monthly premiums for some adults and dental benefit changes beginning in July 2027.

Speakers will also explain which Medi-Cal services and benefits will continue to be available, who is affected by these changes, and what members can do to keep their coverage. Attendees will learn about important deadlines, eligibility requirements, and resources to help eligible individuals and families maintain access to Medi-Cal.
